Becoming a freelancer lawyer and setting your own hours – the freedom you have always wanted?

by Legal Author on November 19, 2022

In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, more and more people are considering alternative ways and models of working – lawyers are no different. Working as a freelance lawyer has many benefits and can help you to work in a way more suited to the type of life you want to lead. In this post, we look at how becoming a freelance lawyer can give you the freedom you have always wanted.

Set your own hours

Working 9-5 (and sometimes a lot later) isn’t for everyone, but working as a freelance lawyer can allow you to set your own working hours. Setting different working hours is ideal for those with children to care for, or even just early birds who like to start and finish early. You could try out a four-day-work-week or flexible working to find a working pattern that works for you.

Setting your own working hours is easier than you might think. All you need to do is set out clearly what you want your hours to be, and communicate this to your clients and anyone else you work with. Communication and setting expectations is key, but having working hours outside of the 9-5 shouldn’t harm your profitability or client satisfaction.

Set your own schedule

Much of our working week is taken up with unnecessary meetings, or restricted by the times we must be available for calls or in the office. Setting your own schedule differs slightly from setting your own hours – and may be of even greater benefit. When you choose to work as a freelance lawyer, your day is yours. Perhaps you would like to start the day with a few hours of concentrated work – no interruptions from clients or colleagues. Maybe you set aside a few afternoons per week specifically for calls and meetings. Having complete control over your working week can allow you to maximise your productivity, giving you more time to get ahead, or get home early.

No more holiday requests

Fancy taking a month-long trip around the world? You got it. There are many difficulties with taking holidays in the traditional office environment. Perhaps your holiday request overlaps with a few others in your department, or there is a meeting you must attend. When you work as a freelance lawyer, you have the freedom to take holidays at your own discretion.

Work from anywhere

Working as a freelance lawyer not only means you can take time off whenever you want, but it also means you can work from wherever you want to. Taking time off to be away from the office can be challenging, but life gets much easier when your office is wherever you want it to be. If your partner gets a job in another city, an elderly relative needs help or care, or your life circumstances change, and you need to move, you don’t need to worry about how your career will be affected. Your job is wherever you need it to be.
