With a frozen Scotland this December, Michael Maloco of Maloco Associates explains the impact on his property solicitors and estate agency practice in Dunfermline, Fife.

“As snow and ice gripped the country, trains stopped running and the mercury plunged, the property market was, rather like the M8, effectively closed to all traffic.
As the photograph above shows the outlook has quite literally been a frosty one. Whereas we would normally arrange around 50 or so viewings per week on our stock of properties, week beginning 29th November saw us arrange only 5. The vast majority of the homes we are selling were impossible to reach and indeed many still are at the time of writing ( 9th. December ).
It is doubtful if much meaningful business will be transacted between now and the Christmas break with the period of The Deep Freeze effectively bringing the market to a premature halt this year.
Hopefully lessons will have been learned from the difficulties encountered this last fortnight and the new year will see the country better prepared for any further spells of bad weather. This will then allow the housing market to continue to function.
For now the only thing to do is admire the view, prepare for the festivities and catch up on correspondence. There’s a rotund old gent Lapland way I must drop a line to…”
